Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (2023)

Brune ranks the offensive and defensive transfers heading to Baton Rouge in 2022.

Matthew Brun

New head coach Brian Kelly can only do so much with the 2022 high school class, but LSU still finished in the top 12. While both February signings were great, the last two months have been more focused on the transfer portal than anything else for Kelly and his new staff .

In this regard, they have always been elite. Kelly added 12 transfers and was able to bring back Myles Brennan, who walked in the door this season. The new reinforcements are also good players. Nine of the 12 were regular starters at their former schools, and seven played in Big Five conferences.

The class ranks third among 247 sports transfer portals, with two teams above the Tigers, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss, landing five-star transfer quarterbacks, while Brennan is not considered for the Tigers' 2022 class.

Either way, this is a team that will help this team compete right away in the ultra-competitive SEC West. There are six defensive players, five offensive players and two special players in the class, and today we take a look at the group and rank them from top to bottom. I won't include two specialists, long snapper Slade Roy and punter Jay Bramblett, both of whom will likely get a ton of minutes.

That leaves us with 10 transfer additions, but we've also included Brennan in this ranking. This is my personal ranking, so feel free to ask me about any disagreements - Matthew Brune. All of these players were ranked by 247Sports for transfers, so you can check out the overall grade page if you want these players.

I rated each of these players in the site's VIP analysis story, which I'll link to as well, so check them out for a more in-depth look at the latest Tigers. Now let's look at the ranking.

11. LB Western Weekly

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (2)

The young guard from Virginia is a good option to add to the defense. 6 feet 2 inches tall, western leafHe is a big defender with good physique but could improve his speed and explosiveness with the ball. In certain plays, he has the ability to pass the ball. He has started a few games, but as a true freshman, he is more of a rotation player for the Cavaliers. With just one year left in college, Weeks has three years of eligibility remaining, not including a possible redshirt year, giving this defense more long-term defense than most of the other picks we'll cover here.

Weeks had 31 tackles for loss and five pass breakups in 11 games last year. Rated an 88 in 247Sports' transfer ratings, he helped give the player some much-needed depth early on.

Bren's rating: 87

I like his potential better than his performance last year. He can improve athleticism and overall pursuit, but with sophomore size and coverage, he could warrant a steal. Even if he doesn't play in 2022, it won't bankrupt him.

10. IOL Tre'Mond Shorts

After five years of college football,Tre'mond shortsHe is entering his final year of college football and is looking to make an immediate impact at LSU. He was an FCS All-American on the ball at ETSU the past two seasons, but expects to be an interior offensive lineman for Baton Rouge. He has a good shot and is excellent in the running game. The more he ran behind him as far as he could, he continued to dig.

We expected him to compete for the vacant center spot, but any of the big three spots would really suit him. We'll have to see how he fits in with the significantly increased talent of SEC athletes over FCS quarterbacks. 247Sports rates him an 89 transfer, and his experience justifies the high rating.

Bren's rating: 88

The competition in the quality of indoor shorts is going to be tough, but Brad Davis knows what he's doing, so we'll see how it plays out.

9. RB Noah Kane

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (3)

After three years at Penn State, just kainProving that he is more than capable of being a solid defender. Although his injury at the end of his sophomore season was a concern, he came back and had a great third year and is now headed to LSU with two or three years of eligibility (not sure about the COVID years with him). He is a smart defender with vision and patience, but can be explosive at times. 247Sports has an 89 transmission grade for him.

Bren's rating: 88

Cain immediately adds quality depth to the backroom and a guy who might be more versatile than anyone in the room right now. From pass protection, receiving to dribbling in the red zone, Cain will be a fascinating player to watch.

Comprehensive analysis

8. DL Mekhi Wingo

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (4)

Mek Wingois the highest-rated transfer added by LSU, rated 94 by 247Sports, and he gets the honor to match. During his one year at Missouri, he was a key part of their defensive line and was named a 2021 Securities All-American with 27 tackles. He was a very strong defensive player for the Tigers and ate up many blocks against a defense that struggled most of the season. I like his lead but even now he finishes the race well with good drive and sharp vision.

Bren's rating: 90

I guess 247Sports is more short-sighted than I am because I don't see Wingo becoming a top-three defenseman in 2022, but I definitely think he has the ability to be a star in the next few years.

Comprehensive analysis

7. DB Greg Brooks

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (5)

There is no doubting what Brooks accomplished for Baton Rouge. In three years he recorded 111 tackles, 4 pass breakups, 8 interceptions and recovered 2 fumbles. He was a playmaker at number five, which took a hit when Cordale Flott declared for the NFL draft. Arkansas uses him in a few different ways and he looks good in punts, zones, blitzing or making a difference in the run. I like his closing speed and how responsive he is in coverage. 247Sports gives him a transfer rating of 90. In the year of COVID, he has two years to qualify.

(Video) Transfer Portal Rankings: Top 10 College Football Classes In 2023 Ft. Michigan, Colorado, USC & LSU

Bren's rating: 91

The experience he has is great, but his versatility will be a huge plus for the Tigers' 2022 defense. I am excited to see how it is used.

Comprehensive analysis

6. WR Karen Lacy

In two years at ULL, the Thibodaux native established himself as a vital threat to the Ragin' Cajuns offense with 50 catches for 668 yards and 10 touchdowns. 6 feet 2 inches tall,Karen LacyHe is a good runner with great speed, but can also add yardage off the catch. He is an excellent playmaker and is a perfect fit for the Tigers' talented receiver room. 247Sports rates him an 89 transfer with three years left to qualify.

Bren's rating: 91

His numbers don't jump out because of Louisiana's reliance on the run, but his talent is obvious to anyone who has seen him play.

Comprehensive analysis

5. CB Mekhi Garner

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (6)

There is a big hole to fill at cornerback after the trio left the team, but Garner will be a plug-and-play weapon to defend the perimeter. An All-Sun Belt cornerback from the University of Louisiana, Garner finished his redshirt junior season with 31 tackles for a loss and eight passes for a loss, showing incredible coverage in man-to-man situations. He was often the other team's best receiver and therefore saw a lot of action and played a lot. 247Sports rated him 89 as a transfer and he comes to LSU with two years of eligibility remaining.

Bren's rating: 92

Unless another corner moves, Garner will start and see a lot of action in Death Valley. He has size and skill, and now he just needs to get used to it in the SEC.

Comprehensive analysis

4. OT Miles Frazier

Frazier, who is the second-highest rated transfer on 247Sports, has a 92 grade and is one of the most highly regarded offensive linemen entering the portal this offseason, with offers from several of the top programs in the country. The FIU offensive tackle showed off his impressive ceiling, touch and agility and looks to be an immediate contributor for the Tigers with three years to go.

Bren's rating: 92

LSU needs an offensive lineman after losing their entire offensive line, and Frazier will be a big part of that going forward.

3. QB Myles Brennan

It's not technically an "add," but his return to LSU after entering the transfer portal still means a lot to the program. There were many rankings early in the process that projected Brennan as a top-five transfer guard, and even though it was a few late moves ago, I now rank him as the seventh best "door" guard. Obviously, we haven't seen him since the fall of 2020, but Brennan was slated to start in 2021 before his shoulder injury. At this point, he's eager to step on the floor and make a difference, and that's a huge motivator for this team, even with a year of eligibility.

Bren's rating: 93

He is an experienced vet with a wealth of knowledge, and now it's about applying that knowledge. If he stays healthy, I expect him to have a very strong season.

Comprehensive analysis

2. S Joe Foch

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (7)

Joe FosaBring much-needed talent to tired high schools. He brings SEC experience to a defense with very little. Most importantly, he brings talent to the Tigers' defense. He is the captain of Arkansas' revived 2021 defense and finished the year with 73 tackles for loss, five fumbles and two interceptions. His presence will reinvigorate this defense. It seems like it's everywhere. 247Sports has him rated 89 after three straight starts for the Razorbacks, with one year of transfer eligibility remaining.

Bren's rating: 94

I don't understand how a three-year starter in the SEC and one of the top defenses in Arkansas could be significantly under 94. Looking at the other names on Portal's grades, there are few defensive backs of Foucha's ability, even fewer with experience, and no SEC- representatives in the game.

1. CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse

Ranking of LSU's 2022 transfer portal additions (8)

LSU's biggest and best chance entering the transfer window,Jarrick Bernard-ConverseMark the Tigers in 2022. The former Oklahoma standout arrives at LSU after one year as an elite cornerback among the top three defenses in the country with the ability to make a difference in any coverage. Bernard Converse has returned home to Louisiana after four straight years in Stillwater, Oklahoma, with one more year to go. Rated a 90 by 247Sports, he has the ability and experience to be one of the best cornerbacks in the country — as he was essentially a first-team All-Big 12 selection last year.

Bren's rating: 95

Sometimes transfers just don't work out, and I'm sure there will be some guys on this list struggling to find their footing, but I don't think it's Bernard-Converse. He has been too good in too many different schemes for too long to fail. He will be the CB1 and will be a stabilizing force for this secondary.

Hurd, Akenhausen made key plays on the mound and LSU's offense constantly put pressure on the entire team to win.

West Glenn

A few innings into LSU's game against South Carolina Wednesday morning, the broadcast zoomed in on pitcher Thatcher Hurd's glove.

It's a tan Marucci glove, but as the camera continues to zoom in, a name appears on the page, Paul Skenes. Hurd donned the Skens glove and pitched a great game for the Purple and Gold as Hoover's offense came alive and outscored the Gamecocks 10-3.

Hurd retired a game-high 12 hitters and held one of the SEC's top offenses to 5.1 clutch innings, allowing three runs and four strikeouts.

Control has been a big question surrounding Hurd and his consistency on the mound this season. Even with his countdown Wednesday against South Carolina's power hitter, he was able to come back hard through the first four innings, forcing fly balls, ground balls and strikeouts.

"We're trying to win the game and if he goes, we're going to keep him," Johnson said on the Game 4 broadcast.

Perhaps the most important sign of Hurd's play of late was that South Carolina had little impact on him as Ethan Petry hit a homer early in the first and one out to start the fifth.

Hurd's prowess on the mound gave LSU's hitters plenty of time to settle in, and the offense started with the bat of lefty Braden Joubert. Jay Johnson decided to put a lot of effort into the lineup on Wednesday, and it worked from the start as Jobert's two-run homer and Game 2 magic gave LSU an early 2-0 lead.

LSU was great from the start, hitting the ball hard and they weren't down, but everything changed when the Tigers saw that offense at its absolute best in the fifth. Disciplined hitting and taking advantage of pitchers' mistakes is what makes this offense so successful, even if the hitting isn't always like that.

The Tigers extended their lead to 6-1 by recording four hits, three free passes and a pair of sacrifice flies to round out the order. Some players are looking to lead this offense in Hoover before the playoffs, so it's nice to see Dylan Cruise and Gavin Dugas put together some good hitters in monster innings.

Seven of the nine Tiger starters hit base at least twice in the game, and nine either scored or RBI. That's just the full effort of this offense.

When South Carolina was threatened in the sixth, LSU responded with two RBI hits from Tre Morgan and Hayden Travinski to keep the score close. Four of LSU's 10 hits came with two outs, reinforcing the fact that this offense makes you work hard for every out.

With the lead, Hurd was in trouble again in the sixth, loading the bases and Johnson was forced into a groundout. It was a necessary play for Johnson as he elected to drive Hurd, but another walk to Petri ended his outing.

The bullpen needs to limit the damage and trap Hurd in key positions, and the Tigers will look to Nate Akenhausen for the final two outs. He stopped the Gamecock offense from getting back into the game with strikeouts and ground outs.

Ackenhausen would lead LSU to finish on the mound in dominant fashion the rest of the game, another encouraging relief from a bullpen featuring Hurd and Gavin Guidry in the Georgia series. The southpaw has battled hamstring issues this year but has struck out six and retired 11 of the 15 batters he's faced out of the bullpen.

The team hit rock bottom a few weeks ago against Mississippi State, but seems to be slowly regaining its confidence.

LSU will now prepare to play the winner of second-seeded Arkansas and 10th-seeded Texas A&M on Thursday at approximately 4:30 p.m.
