College basketball transfers: How the top five will affect the new 2022-23 team (2023)

More than 1,000 Division I men's basketball players entered the transfer portal this offseason, and nearly all have found new homes for the season, whether it's the NBA, a new college team or plans to return to one.

CBS Sports' David Cobb followsHans top 25 transfers i hele offseason.Evaluating transfers can be difficult, but the most important transfers can make a significant contribution. With that, let's dive into David's top five signings and what they will bring to the new team this season.

One thing before we dig in: all round points are from Synergy Sports. The player's possession shots and shots, shots and misses, going to the free throw line or turning the ball over are included in the calculation.

1.Kendrick Davis(Memphis)

As the AAC Defensive Player of the Year of the SMU, Kendrick Davis performed at a high level in almost every way, but he really excels in two areas: spot-up and isolation. Last year, Davis scored 1.28 points per game. possession (97th percentile among D-Is) and 1,015 points per possession (86th percentile). Just one more player -freeStarDarius McGee-- Score 1.2 PPP and 1 PPP in both categories (minimum 90 innings).

As for exactly what he brings to Memphis, Davis' iso output stands out. He's a guy to watch: touches the strings, great acceleration, great body control and great singles. He also had the highest foul percentage of any AAC player last year.

Memphis, meanwhile, is scoring just .698 points per game. isolation, which is 276th in Division I. The Tigers' best offense comes in transition, and as a result, they played the best tempo in Division I last year. While Davis has been great all over the offense, he will shine in the half court.

2.no bag(Miami)

Nijel Pack is clearly the best scorer on the transfer portal. He was also arguably the top scorer in the country last season. Parker scored an absurd 1,469 points per game. ranking, the best by any major league player (with at least 50 players) last year and the best by any Big 12 player since Synergy began tracking it in 2005-06.

Parker has excellent awareness of the opposition's defense, which not only helps him decide when to move the ball away, buthowMovement and space with purpose. Let's look at three examples.

The first one is my favorite. When the pack realizes his defender has made a slight misstep on the screen, he crosses the 3-point line and gets into position to score. It was a small lapse by the defense, but Parker had the basketball IQ, range and quick release to capitalize on it. In another clip, he deftly moves several feet to allow his teammate to complete a cross pass that wouldn't have been possible had Parker stayed in the corner. In the third clip, notice how Parker moves back slightly when the ball is passed to him, giving him enough room to get up and shoot over two defenders. If he doesn't create extra space, he may not be able to shoot. Pack is constantly working smarter - not necessarily harder - to be in the right place.

Parker can play point guard or shooting guard, but is best suited for the latter. While his rebounding isn't particularly explosive, the returning star is guardedIsaiah WongYes. After the defense helps Wong, the pack finds an opening on the rim and makes opponents pay.

3.Tyrese Hunter(Texas)

The 12 Big 12 Rookie of the Year surface offensive numbers for Hunter aren't particularly impressive. He's shooting less than 40 percent from the field and 27 percent from three-point range and ranks second in 12 big turnovers per game. But there are many reasons why Hunter is one of the most popular players in Portal and why he will be a big contributor for Texas.

Let's start with the defensive part. He allowed just .714 points per game. possession last year as the primary defender, which was in the 85th percentile in Division 1 last year, in large part because he produced a lot of turnovers. As the primary defender, Hunter allowed turnovers on 20.8 percent of his possessions, 13th among 962 Division I players with at least 200 possessions and first in the Big 12. It's worth noting that Hunter's current teammateMarkus Carr2 in the Big 12. Expect Texas to score a lot of turnovers.

Hunter's combination of physicality, speed, competitiveness and aggressive hands make him a terror for opposing guards.

Offensively, the shooting can be inconsistent, but the game is very important. Hunter's 32.1 assist rate last season was second among Big 12 players, and he was especially good off the screen. He can make all kinds of passes - one-handed or both, with or without eyeball, on the move or stationary - which makes for some really interesting highlights (especially the first one below).

Big men running the edge will love Hunter's pass rush. Karl wants to avoid guarding the opposing team's best playerIPossession of the ball throughout the game. Texas fans will appreciate a player who can attack opponents on both ends of the floor.

4.Isaiah Mosley(Missouri)

When it comes to players who just shoot the ball, Isiah Mosley is not only one of the best, but also one of the most efficient. Last year, Mosley became the only player in the last decade to average at least 20 points on 50/40/90 shooting. That alone makes him a huge addition to the Missouri teamnew coachDennis Gates.

The Tigers return just one of the top five scorers from last year's team. mosley willthisguy, luckily for Missouri, he's a great guy. Last year, he was one of only three players to average at least one point per game. possession as a ball player.IAs a quick scorer (at least 50 possessions). But where it can really fulfill it is in isolation. Detroit's only star of mercyAnthony DavisMore points in isolation than Mosley's 143 last season. A look at the different ways Mosley scored in isolation as part of his 40-point streakLoyola Chicago.

Mosley has the size, strength, touch and shooting ability to put up points in a hurry. Although he doesn't finish at the rim as often, his variety of moves and pull-up jumpers make him an effective drive, while his accuracy off the dribble leads to scoring frenzies. Expect some big games from him as Missouri goes through a transition season.

5.Fardaws Emac(Texas Tech University)

After a promising first seasonMiyoIn 2018-19, Fardaws Aimaq moved toUtah Valley, redshirted and then became the first player ever to win WAC Player of the Year and WAC Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. He won WAC Defensive Player of the Year again last season. In short, there's a reason there's a long list of suitors before he ends up at Texas Tech.

Offensively, Aimaq's biggest improvement is his jump shot. In his first two varsity seasons combined, he made 13 halftime field goal attempts. Last year he took 62 pitches and made 25 of them, or 40 percent. In addition to being in the low post, he is also comfortable stepping out of the three-point line. Last year, Aimaq was one of only three players to score at least 200 post-up shooting points and at least 60 rebound points, coming withMichiganStarhunter DickinsonIthe standstand outorlando robinson.

Aimaq also grabbed 13.6 rebounds per game last year, second only in Division IKFC-a Oscar Chibwe, and allowed just .722 points per game. possession as the primary defender, ranking him 81st out of 962 players who have defended at least 200 possessions. He uses his size well without fouling, and while he will need to improve as a pick-and-roll and outside pick-and-roll defender, he is very good at defending the paint, which is Texas' strength. Tech's defense was outstanding last year.
